The Strathmore Woollen Company is one of Scotland’s leading authentic tartan suppliers and its reputation has always been synonymous with quality and service. Although we now have customers in over 30 countries worldwide, The Strathmore Woollen Company is still essentially a family owned and managed business. It was originally founded in 1949 as a joint venture between the then Don Brothers, Buist & Company of Forfar and Ballantynes of Peebles, although the latter withdrew from the partnership in 1952.
Following a management buyout in 1983 by Sales Director David Cowley, ownership was transferred to the Cowley family, whose historic connections and expertise within the Scottish textile industry have ensured that the company has continued to prosper.
The company employs a 10 strong local workforce; the majority of whom have been with the business for 10 years or more. In September, 2009, Jonathan Brown joined the team as Sales and Marketing Director bringing to the company a wealth of experience in design and customer relations and adding to the existing expertise within the company.
Until recent years the main stay of the business was the wholesale supply of tartan fabric to Retail and Manufacturing companies, both small and large. With the global revival of interest in the wearing of tartan, Strathmore has seized the opportunity of expanding its existing business in made to measure garments, such as gent’s kilts, ladies kilted skirts, trousers, children’s kilts and accessories, both at home and overseas.
The company also offers a comprehensive Tartan Design Service.
