MacDonald Isles Hunting Modern

Description

The powerful MacDonald Lords of the Isles were descended from the Norse-Gaelic lord Somhairle and later claimed the Headship of the Gaels. John of Islay became the first MacDonald Lord of the Isles, with the lordship commanding land across the Hebrides, the West Highlands and the earldom of Ross while maintaining close connections to Ireland. MacDonald lords were inaugurated upon a stone with a foot imprint and lead a council at Finlaggin Castle on Islay. The lordship disintegrated after 1493 with John, 4^th Lord of the Isles. The MacDonalds were significant patrons of professional kindreds, including the MacMhuirichs, a lineage of historians who composed poetic works for the MacDonalds.
