The name MacKay means Son of Aodh or Son of Fire in Scottish Gaelic. Some MacKays operated as metal workers as part of a professional smithing kindred within the west Highlands. They were patronised for a time by the MacDonalds, the most powerful clan in the region in the late medieval period. Craftsmen were high status individuals within the elite cultural community of the west Highlands, similar in esteem to physicians, historians, and poets. The clan held lands in northern Scotland, with several strongholds associated with MacKay families including Castle Varrich or Caisteal Bharraich in Tongue.
Their motto is Manu forti, With a strong hand.
