Black Watch Dress Modern

Description

The Black Watch tartan was named for the Highland militia that would become the Black Watch regiment. The militia was raised as ‘Independent Companies’ in 1725 for the British army. Their purpose was to watch for crime within the Highlands; this was on the recommendation of General Wade, later Commander in Chief of North Britain, after the 1715 Jacobite Rising. There were six Highland companies within this militia, made up of Campbell, Munro, Grant, and Fraser of Lovat companies. The Black Watch wore dark kilts, distinguishing them from other soldiers. The regiment has undergone several incorporations since its creation and is now part of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The regiment’s motto is Nemo me impune lacessit, No one provokes me with impunity
