Description

The surname Fitzpatrick is Irish in origin, originating as an anglicisation of the Irish name Mac Giolla Phádraig meaning ‘Son of the servant of Patrick’, the patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick was a Romano-British Christian who wrote in his biographical Confessio that he was kidnapped to Ireland in the 5^th century and eventually became a missionary, feeling prophetically called towards it in an age of uncertainty. Several legends are associated with St Patrick, such as his banishing snakes from the island. The Mac Giolla Phádraig surname was found in lineages across Ireland, although it is traditionally associated with a baronial clan with lands in Upper Ossary.
