MacGregor Red OC

Description

The MacGregor clan, were of Siol Alpin, claiming descent from Kenneth MacAlpine, the traditional first King of Alba. Their traditional lands were largely based around Argyll and Perthshire. James MacGregor, Dean of Lismore, probably compiled of the Book of the Dean of Lismore, the most important manuscript for contemporary knowledge of the medieval Highlands. The clan was dispossessed in 1603 By James VI of Scotland, an act that was not repealed until 1774, forcing many MacGregors to change their names. One of their most famous members, the cateran and Jacobite Rob Roy MacGregor was later immortalised by novelist Sir Walter Scott.

Their motto is ‘S Rioghal mo dhream, Royal is my Race.
