MacGuire

Description

The McGuire or Maguire family, whose name means Mág Uidhir in Irish or Son of Odhar, were an elite native Irish family who held power in Fermanagh in Ulster. The Maguires were inaugurated at Sciath Ghabhra near their stronghold at Lisnaskea. Enniskillen Castle was later built by the Maguire family as a stronghold. With the O’Neills and O’Donnells they were one of the most powerful lordships in Ulster. After the Nine Years War and Flight of the Earls in 1607, Cú Chonnacht Maguire organised the escape of O’Neill and O’Donnell but most of the Maguires remained in Ireland, living through the period of English and Scottish plantation.
