MacKenzie OC

Description

The MacKenzie clan were a Highland kindred whose lands centred around Ross and the Hebrides, with particular ties to Kintail. They rose to become the most powerful clan in the north of Scotland following the disintegration of the Lordship of the Isles after 1493 and had ties to central government, later receiving aristocratic titles, including the earldom of Seaforth. The MacKenzies rapidly expanded their lands throughout in 1600s, often at the expense of the MacLeods during their expansion west to Lewis in the period of the Fife Adventurers. The MacKenzie’s seat, Castle Leod is located near Strathpeffer in Ross; they previously held other fortifications across Ross including Eilean Donan Castle.

Their motto is Luceo Non Uro, I Shine Not Burn.
