Description

This tartan belongs to a number of surnames due to how patterns were collected in the 19^th century. Clan tartans, as they are recognised today, were collected, designed, and categorised from the late Georgian period by organisations such as the Highland Society of London. As such this tartan was first recorded as belonging to the Galbraith clan by early collectors, the Highland Society of London, although it was later recorded as Russell by prolific Stirlingshire weavers Wilson of Bannockburn, then named after a US general, Billy Mitchell. These surnames and families encompass various regions of Scotland, with Galbraith being particularly associated with lands in Lennox and Gigha as hereditary harpists.
