Description
The Stewart dynasty ruled Scotland, and later Great Britain, from 1371. The royal house was descended from Walter, High Steward of Scotland and Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert I. Their traditional lands were gifted to them before their ascension to the throne, largely based in central Scotland and Bute. It was during Stewart rule that Scotland’s borders grew to its present form, gaining Orkney and Shetland. As monarchs the Stewarts possessed a number of properties, including Stirling Castle and Linlithgow Palace. The spelling of Stewart was changed to Stuart in the 16th century. The last Stuart monarch, Anne, died in 1714, leaving the throne to her relative George, Elector of Hanover.
Their motto is Virescit vulnere virtus, Courage grows strong at a wound.
