Wallace Red Modern

Description

The Wallace’s were a family of possible Shropshire origin, with land in the south-west of Scotland where they were tenants of the powerful Stewarts. The most famous Wallace, William, has an uncertain background, although it is possible he was the son of a landholder who held property on Stewart lands. He was a military commander during the Wars of Scottish Independence, leading a successful campaign with Andrew de Moray against Edward I of England’s forces, and serving as Guardian of Scotland between 1297-1298 before his execution in 1305. The Wallace Monument near Stirling is a fantastical Gothic revival tribute to him.
